   HISTORY

Lubos Tomicek (1934-1968)

Lubos started his career in 1956 in motocross, and the next year he started on a speedway bike. He rode his whole career on a Jawa machine.

His results were very good and he was climbing well up the speedway ladder. He became the top rider in Czech. For eight years he won almost everything in his home country, in the league with his club Rudá Hvezda Prag and in the individual championship (5 times Czech champion).

His results were good throughout the world too. He started riding in some meetings in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Sweden, Poland, USSR and others. From these meetings, he gained respect as a good rider. At this time this was very important to achieve gains in the USSR, as speedway was big in that country at the time.

He got a contract to ride in the British league for Bristol, and in 1965 he rode in the Individual world final at Wembley (16th place). Between 1960-1968 he was captain of our Czech team in the World Championship (1960 - 3rd place).

In his short career he achieved a lot. Throughout his career he had only small injuries, only a broken arm. His dream was to win the Golden helmet in Pardubice. In 1968, in the final heat of this meeting, he beat all riders such as Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs. But from first place, he had a bad crash and the last rider ran into Luboš. He died from this injury on October 20th 1968.

Since then there is a regular meeting at Prague stadium Markéta in his memory - Memorial Luboše Tomícka. Many of the worlds best riders compete in this meeting such as Greg Hancock, Lee Richardson, Jason Crump & Lukas Dryml. In 2003 it was won by Bo Brhel.
